Don't miss this one of kind house!!!******* A PIECE OF HISTORY: Mary Norton House built in 1820, was the house of John and Mary Norton. Mary Norton was a friend of Clara Barton and she stayed in this very house. When Clara Barton took a job with the Patent Office in Washington, D.C. in 1854, she became the only American woman working in the federal government in the mid-nineteenth century. Clara left Washington after the Civil War began in 1861 to nurse wounded soldiers at the front. The soldiers began calling her the "Angel of the Battlefield" for here selfless service and patient care. Throughout the war, she continued to write Mary Norton, who sent Clara boxes of food and clothing for the troops. Clara later organized the Red Cross in 1881, Mary was one of its four charter members. (Hightstown East Windsor historical society)
